About the Masseuse

songSong Sutthimaitree has been practicing traditional Thai Massage since 2008. Before leaving her native Thailand for the United States, she studied with a traditional Thai doctor, and after arriving in the USA, she continued her studies at the Thai Institute of Healing in Virginia, sister institute to the Chiang Mai Old Medicine Hospital in Thailand. Besides classes in California and Virginia, her education continues, and in 2014, she completed additional training at the Thai Institute in Virginia, to become certified in Tok-Sen* and traditional Thai Herbal Massage.*

Some enthusiasts refer to Thai Massage as "Thai Yoga Massage," perhaps because it has been described by some devotees as "like doing yoga without any work." During Thai massage, no oil is applied, the client is fully dressed, and it is done on a padded mat on the floor.

The therapist uses her hands, feet, elbows, knees, fingers, etc. to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. The result is a deeper release in body, mind and spirit, giving the recipient a sense of relaxation and inner peace. By balancing and clearing the blocked energy pathways within our bodies, regular Thai Massage helps to restore tranquility and well-being.

songIIIn addition to Thai Massage, Song teaches yoga locally, and meditates regularly. She developed her meditation practice after years of study with a Thai monk., which in turn led her to yoga. She believes that all of these ancient healing modalities share many common attributes to help one obtain more flexibility, muscle relaxation, strengthened immunity and ultimately, serenity. Song considers this work to be her spiritual practice, incorporating the Buddhist principles of mindful breathing and kind compassion for both therapist and client. She integrates each of these modalities into a unique healing practice based on her culture's rich tradition of bodywork and movement.

* What is Tok-Sen? What is Thai Herbal Massage?

Tok-Sen originated in Northern Thailand, and is an ancient practice of using a special wooden hammer, made from the bark of the tamarind tree, to tap or hammer ("tok" means to hammer) along the energy lines or pathways ("sen" refers to the pathways) of the body. Much like the meridians of acupuncture, these are the lines through which our body's energy moves. When our energy becomes stagnant, Tok-Sen can help release these sluggish or blocked energies.

With Thai Herbal Massage, a ball of cotton is filled with common herbs like kaffir lime, ginger, lemongrass, local and seasonal herbs, and often customized to the client. The bundle of herbs is then heated in a steamer for about 10-15 minutes, before application to the affected area of the body.
